New York comes to life through the lenses of the world’s most influential photographers

The Art Gallery of Western Australia has said goodbye to its world-class show Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters, the highly successful launch exhibition of the exclusive series from The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Over 100,000 visitors viewed the exquisite selection of more than 120 modern art works, making it the Gallery’s most successful exhibition since Egyptian Antiquities from the Louvre in 2007.

Not an institution to rest on its laurels, AGWA is now busily preparing for the arrival of the second exhibition in the series, Picturing New York: Photographs from The Museum of Modern Art.

Opening on Australia Day, Saturday 26 January, Picturing New York promises to captivate all those who share a love for photography or New York, as well as those curious to know more about either.

Drawn exclusively from MoMA’s extraordinary photography collection, the exhibition traces the dynamic rise of modern photography from 1888 to 2005 through a multitude of visions of the ever-changing city and its famously diverse population. This is a rare opportunity for visitors to see both iconic photographs by the world’s most legendary photographers as well as lesser-known, though equally treasured gems, produced over the course of a profoundly transformative period for both the city and photography.

Collection in focus

MADE TO remember

AGWA is delighted to announce Made to Remember, the next instalment of Collection in focus – a series of rotating displays drawn from the State Art Collection. Each display provides an in-depth exploration of a distinct area within the Collection.

Made to Remember, which opens on 24 November, is a beautifully considered display of significant Indigenous objects from the State Art Collection selected by Clotilde Bullen, Curator of Indigenous Art at the Art Gallery of WA. With a diverse selection of works including glass and ceramic objects, textiles and clothing, as well as examples of traditional sculpture, Made to Remember encourages dialogue about the place of an object not only in Indigenous art and culture, but in the broader Australian context.

WAM Winners line up to farewell Picasso to Warhol at AGWA

Friday 30 November will see WAM Song of the Year 2012 Winner, Rainy Day Women, and 2012 WAM Jazz Award Winner Abbey/Foster/Falle performing at the final AGWA Nights for Picasso to Warhol.

The AGWA Nights Last Hurrah! will showcase highlights from seasons one and two: comedian Dave Callan is back in town for the night; VJ Zoo is running their Warholesque Screen Tests; along with the musical performances by Rainy Day Women and Abbey/Foster/Falle, performing as Abbey/Foster+. Also on offer is one of the last chances to view Picasso to Warhol before it closes on 3 December, the popular Literary Links tour at 5.45pm, and the Manhattan-inspired pop-up bar is back in action too.

FILM FESTIVAL CLOSING BRINGS WARHOL’S NEW YORK TO LIFE

A cocktail-style celebration of Americana and some real life insights into artist Andy Warhol will spice up the closing festivities when Friends of the Art Gallery of WA present the Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters Film Festival Closing Night Party.

A cocktail party featuring dancing from the Hullabaloo Hoppers, American tunes and all-American refreshments will set the scene at the Art Gallery of WA – and then comes the gossip!

Performing outdoors on the Art Gallery of WA wetlands stage, Australia’s premier singer/songwriter Josh Pyke will bring the 2012 ARTBAR season to a close, in this exclusive Perth show, as part of his national “Only Sparrows” tour. The Western Australian Indigenous Art Awards is a national award founded in 2008 to celebrate the breadth, diversity and excellence in art from all corners of Indigenous Australia. The awards acknowledge the significant and ongoing contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists make to Australian art, culture and society.

Nominations are now open for The Western Australian Indigenous Art Awards 2013.
Nominations close at 5pm (WST) on Monday 14 January 2013.

Luminous World - Contemporary Art from the Wesfarmers Collection

Luminous World presents a diverse selection of contemporary paintings, photography and works of sculpture, acquired by the Wesfarmers Collection over thirty years and considered through the lens of how contemporary artists variously explore the phenomenon of light in their work. This is a unique opportunity for visitors to AGWA to view an innovative thematic selection of more than 60 contemporary works from the Wesfarmers Collection and for Wesfarmers to share one of its great assets with the public across Australia.

Some 50 artists from Australia and New Zealand are featured in the exhibition including: Susan Norrie, Rosemary Laing, Howard Taylor, Dale Frank, Paddy Bedford, Bill Henson, Fiona Pardington (NZ), Brian Blanchflower, Brook Andrew, Timothy Cook and Nyapanyapa Yunupingu.

Bringing local music and global art together at AGWA

The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) and the West Australian Music Industry Association Inc (WAM) today announced their new collaboration, which will combine the music of local WA bands with the global art of Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters, in the second series of AGWA Nights.

Continuing on from the success of the jazz themed nights in Season One, AGWA Nights Season Two returns from September to November, with an exciting line-up of talented local bands including Diger Rockwell & Felicity Groom, Taal Naan, and the Joe Black Trio.

Bright Young AGWA Guides Competition

The Art Gallery of Western Australia is searching for WA’s best Bright Young AGWA Guides. AGWA, in partnership with the 2012 AWESOME Festival, is launching a competition to find six lucky young people to be tour guides at the Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters exhibition during the AWESOME Festival in October.

Children will have to explain in 100 words or less why they would like to be a tour guide for Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters. The lucky six who are selected will participate in a workshop with an AGWA Educator, where they will learn all about the fourteen Modern Masters in the exhibition and pick up some guiding techniques from our very experienced Gallery Guides.

Santos Year 12 Perspectives 2011 Winner is Caitlin Rash

The Year 12 Perspectives 2011 Santos People’s Choice Award was awarded to Caitlin Rash whose work
Koi was voted the most popular by Gallery audiences. Over 28,000 people have visited this year’s exhibition, with thousands of votes cast.

John Anderson, Santos Vice President for WA and Northern Territory, presented Caitlin with her award and prize of a trip for two to the Art Gallery of South Australia for receiving the most votes from the WA
community.

Caitlin attended Applecross Senior High School. As part of her prize her school also received 30 tickets to visit the Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters exhibition from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, opening at the Gallery in June this year. One lucky voter also wins a season pass for two to this first MoMA exhibition.

Tom Malone Prize Winner 2012

The Art Gallery of Western Australia is delighted to announce that the winner of the 2012 Tom Malone Prize for contemporary glass artists is Brian Corr for his work Ensō.

This year’s Prize was judged by Governor of the Art Gallery of Western Australia Foundation, Elizabeth Malone; AGWA’s Director, Stefano Carboni; glass artist, Klaus Moje; and AGWA’s Curator of Modern and Contemporary Photography and Design, Robert Cook.

The Year 12 Perspectives exhibition is here! Once again this popular annual event provides the platform to showcase selected works from students graduating from Year 12 Visual Arts.

Year 12 Perspectives 2011 promises to deliver works of technical excellence and emotional complexity.
A judging panel compiled from representatives from the Education Department, the Curriculum Council of Western Australia, Catholic Education and the Art Gallery of WA have selected 55 varied works across a range of medium and subject matter. This year a general theme of relationships and connectivity appears to have evolved across the diverse selection.

A new way to see Your Collection

In an exciting new presentation, it is the first time Your Collection has been displayed chronologically; it traces art made in the early nineteenth century, locally and around the world, to the art of today. Your Collection 1800 – today brings together an extraordinary group of over 450 Western Australian  Indigenous and non-Indigenous, national and international art, craft and design from the State Art Collection. There are four principal areas of display which you can discover on the ground floors of both the Centenary Galleries and the main Gallery building.
