Copyright & Reproduction

The Art Gallery of Western Australia has a rich and diverse collection of artworks.

In many instances, the artist, not the Gallery, owns the copyright in his or her works of art, and these artists’ copyrights are protected under the Australian Copyright Act 1968.

Visitors are permitted to take photographs with hand-held devices in non-restricted public areas within the Art Gallery of Western Australia for personal use only.

The use of tripods, flash or additional lighting is not permitted. Images photographed under this policy cannot be reproduced, displayed on personal websites, or used commercially.

Some areas of the Gallery and/or some temporary exhibitions may, at various times, be excluded from this policy. These areas will display signage at the entrance of the exhibition or gallery space advising of the photography restrictions.

Currently, a small selection of the Gallery's Collection is online. This is a representative sample only.
The Gallery is working towards increasing the number of works available for online viewing.

Special consideration can be arranged for the use of tripods, flash or additional lighting for media purposes only. A request must be made and granted before such equipment can be used in any gallery spaces.

Copyright and Reproduction

If you wish to reproduce any works in the State Art Collection, housed by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, please contact our Registration Department.  We can supply you with the conditions and costs associated with your request and grant appropriate reproduction rights.

Please be advised that AGWA does not have a dedicated Rights & Reproduction Officer so there will be significant delays in attending to copyright inquiries and requests to reproduce any works of art in the State Art Collection.

In the meantime please complete an Application to Reproduce Works of Art form which can be downloaded below. Please forward via email to, and your request will be attended to as soon as reasonably possible.

Copyright is the responsibility of the Applicant. If the Art Gallery of Western Australia does not hold copyright, the applicant will be asked to provide a licence or written permission to reproduce from the copyright holder, prior to the supply of photographic material.
