Yeahnahnesia Book Launch

Yeahnahnesia Book Launch

2pm this Saturday, join us for a Q&A with artists Yok & Sheryo as we celebrate the final days of Yeahnahnesia and the launch of the publication Island of Yeahnahnesia: Vol 1.

The Island of Yeahnahnesia brings together imagery and writing by widely travelled artists Yok and Sheryo to introduce a fantastic island culture to the world. In the creation of Yeahnahnesia, the artists draw on their individual cultural experiences and modes of creation and combine these to form a cohesive aesthetic that playfully connects world cultures in memorable and surprising ways. The result is the formation of a world where relaxation is central to existence; a value that Yok and Sheryo wish upon those who engage with their work and reflective of the balance they seek and enact in their own lives.

About the publication

Presented in the form of a scientific journal, this beautiful 112-page hardcover publication includes photographs of Yeahnahnesia's temples and totems, detailed drawings and texts which bring to life the rich history, customs, culture, people and environment of Yeahnahnesia. It's a must for those who, like artists Yok & Sheryo, came to appreciate the island's philosophy of tops surf, double-pluggers, good beers, no fear, and devotion to peace, love and relaxation with a laidback party vibe.

This publication was produced by Yok and Sheryo in partnership with AGWA as a result of the exhibition Yeahnahnesia, curated by Isobel Wise and exhibited at AGWA from 13 November 2022 to 30 April 2023.

First edition 2023, English, 112 pages, hardcover. RRP $55 AUD.

About Yok & Sheryo

Yok & Sheryo are an artist couple based between New York, Australia and Asia. Sheryo grew up in Singapore and began her acclaimed mural practice in 2005. One of the first female painters involved in the street art and graffiti scene in Singapore, in 2013 Jeffrey Deitch included her work alongside other OG female painters like lady pink, faith47, miss van in a show at Wynwood Walls, Miami. Yok is originally from Perth; being fuelled by isolation Yok had to make his own fun, and get creative to entertain himself. This helped form his passion for creating new worlds in which he could escape. The two artists have created together since 2011 and have earned a unique place in the international art world.

Fed by their curious natures and extensive travel, their playfully hybrid, freewheeling work has appeared on walls and in galleries around the globe, as well as in collaboration with companies such as Google, Nike, Adidas, Vans, Converse, Hypebeast, and Billionaire Boys Club.

Soaking up influences and ideas as they move, their works collapse traditional forms and contemporary modes of art, craft and design to populate a fictional tropical land called “Yeahnahnesia”, a place filled with its own eccentric Gods, myths, shrines, temples and creatures.

On Saturday 27 August, the Gallery is open 10am-3pm only as we prepare for the AGWA Foundation Gala supporting women in the arts. Some exhibition access will be disrupted with two Tracks We Share ground floor galleries closed. AGWA Rooftop bar will be closed, reopening at 2pm Sunday. Details
