Pip & Pop: Double Magic

Double Magic draws on stories of fictional geographies, edible fantasy lands and caves that lead to other worlds. I’m interested in paradise mythologies where everything is abundant and enticing, inanimate objects might come to life; places where we can escape our earthly realities. For me, it’s about optimism and wish-fulfilment and our very human desire to imagine somewhere better, while leaving open the possibility that things aren’t always quite what they seem.

About the Artist

Pip & Pop (Australian artist Tanya Schultz & her team) create immersive and colour-saturated installations from an eclectic array of materials including sugar, candy, pigments, modeling clay, artificial flora, crystals, beads, rhinestones, and everyday craft materials. Pip & Pop also create wall-works, videos and 2D works that are similarly excessive, colourful and joyfully optimistic.

Through their obsessively detailed and colour-saturated artworks, they playfully transform everyday materials into psychedelic dreamscapes. Their work draws inspiration from fictional geographies and paradise mythologies, described in folktales, literature and cinema. They are fascinated with imagined utopias, magical places of abundance and immortality; mythical places that may or may not exist, that are found by chance, and that are impossible to locate again.

Pip & Pop artworks have been exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world, including in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Mexico, USA and the UAE.

Exhibitions include When Flowers Dream at Kew Gardens (London), Happy Sky Dream at Aichi Triennale (Japan), Seeing Forever at Kuandu Biennale (Taiwan), We Miss you Magic Land! at Gallery of Modern Art (Australia), Inside this Dream at Sharjah Museum of Art (UAE), and We Light up the Sky at Museum of Contemporary Art Queretaro (Mexico).
